Hortus Botanicus in Leiden is the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands, established in 1590. For over four centuries, Hortus has been the green heart of Leiden. Visitors can enjoy unique plant collections both outdoors in the garden and indoors in various greenhouses. Different walking routes add thematic flair to your visit and offer an in-depth look at the diversity of nature.

The collection at Hortus Botanicus

At Hortus Botanicus Leiden, you can admire a special collection of plants, both in the garden and in the different greenhouses. Since its inception in 1590, generations of botanists have gathered plants from around the world in this botanical garden in the heart of Leiden. The result is a unique collection where you can wander through to enjoy the beauty of nature and learn more about plants.

A particular focus area of Hortus is Southeast Asia. In the garden and greenhouses, you will find many plants native to China, Japan, Indonesia, and other Southeast Asian countries. Key collections include tropical orchids, ferns, carnivorous plants, and unique trees. The crown jewels are masterpieces that you simply cannot miss during your visit.

    • Spring and Summer (March 21 - September 20): Daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
    • Autumn and Winter (September 21 - March 20): Daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
    • Closed on October 3 (Leiden Liberation Day) and from December 25 to January 1.

Accessibility

On foot:

  • From NS Station Leiden Centraal: a fifteen-minute walk. Follow the signs to Hortus Botanicus Leiden. Look for the green cargo bike as a landmark near the gate of the Academy Building. Walk under the gate to enter Hortus.

Public transport

By car:

  • A44 from The Hague, exit Leiden
  • A4 from The Hague, exit 7 Zoeterwoude-Dorp
  • A44 from Amsterdam, exit 8 Leiden
  • A4 from Amsterdam/Utrecht, exit 7 Zoeterwoude-Dorp

By bicycle:

  • Park your bicycle at Rapenburg or in the designated bike area next to the entrance of Hortus. There is also a charging point for electric bicycles.

Parking

Within a 15-minute drive from our hotel, you can reach Hortus Botanicus. Upon arrival in Leiden, it's best to park your car at Stadsparkeerterrein Haagweg or Parkeergarage Centrum Morspoort. From Stadsparkeerterrein Haagweg, a shuttle bus is available on request, taking you within 80 meters of Hortus Botanicus. From Parkeergarage Centrum Morspoort, enjoy a scenic 15-minute walk along the beautiful Leiden canals to reach Hortus Botanicus.
