Unique Egyptian collection

One of the museum's greatest treasures is the Egyptian collection, ranked among the top ten worldwide. Admire the most prominent piece: the two-thousand-year-old Egyptian temple from Taffeh, a gift to the Netherlands in gratitude for support during a UNESCO rescue operation. This impressive temple welcomes you upon entry.

History of the museum

Founded in 1818 as an 'archaeological cabinet' of Leiden University, the museum became an independent foundation in 1955. Since then, it has managed a rich collection and made archaeological heritage accessible to a wide audience.
